Try this writing activity with your child.
Open your child's Social Studies or Science book. Pick a random paragraph from the text. Ask your child to identify the "topic" sentence. Discuss the important information in this sentence. Ask if they are able to determine what information will be in the paragraph based on the topic sentence. Try to find "detail" sentences. Then identify the "ending" sentence. Finally, pick a random topic, noses for instance. Then you and your child write a "Power Paragraph" about noses using a topic sentence, detail sentences and an ending sentence. Compare paragraphs, enjoy the written expression and make a memory!
